Cheap Ornament Makeover

Who knew that a little coat of paint and some baking soda would make such a big impact. Every holiday we end up spending at least 100 dollars on new Christmas decoration’s. This year I decided to revamp some old decorations and make them a little more high end.

Easiest makeover ever! Even a 3 year old can do it.

Last year we bought a whole bucket of ornaments and I used probably seven of them. So, with trying to be frugal and reduce waste I decided to give this baking soda technique a try.

I saw this a while back on Pinterest and before doing an entire wall… I decided to start on a much smaller scale and it did not disappoint.

It’s time to make them pretty.

What I used

  • Baking Soda

  • Old Paint

  • Ornaments

  • Paint Brush

  • Dowel rods

I started by inserting dowel rods in the open end of the ornaments to use as a handle then applied a coat of paint to all of the ornaments giving it a good base layer. While they were drying, I played around with paint colors mixing them to create the color palette I wanted.

Once the first layer of paint was dry, I then added the baking soda to the paint. Adding 1/2 teaspoon for every 2 Tablespoons and fully coated the ornaments again. The measurements I found online for Faux cement look was 2:1 ratio.

2 paint/1 baking soda

To finish them, I dusted them with more baking soda right before they fully dried. Once dried, I brushed off the loose layer of baking soda and

voila!

They turned our beautiful! Exactly how I pictured them.
