DIY Giant rainbow and sun

This was such a laidback and fun project and I must say, it had a big impact. I used it in a party for Blossom Bounce. The theme was 1st Trip around the sun with some rustic country vibes. You can read more about that party here. I knew I wanted something to put at the entrance of the soft play area to tie into the theme of the party.

I knew that I wanted to make a matching decoration piece for the party.

I looked around our garage to see what extra stuff we had laying around. Low and behold. I found some pieces of foam that came in a package we ordered.

I had one large piece of foam and two smaller pieces of foam. I started by cutting the smaller pieces in half. After cutting them in half I folded them over each other in a rainbow shape to cut them to the length they would need to be to sit up right on the ground so each rainbow strip would evenly tough the ground. I unfortunately did not take pictures of this.

For the larger piece, I used a marker attached to a piece of string and made a half dome shape and used a knife to saw through.

It’s time to make them pretty.

What I used

Rainbow and Sun

  • Two muted tan yarn

  • One pink yarn

  • One white yarn

  • One muted rust yarn

  • Two push yellow yarn

  • Wire

  • Hot glue

I started by wrapping the yarn around the sun and hot gluing every 4 inches and on every edge. I made sure to not let the yarn twist so it would lay pretty flat. Once I got to the rounded top of the sun is when it became tricky, I had to make sure to keep the yarn in line so it didn’t throw it off. I glued on edge waited for it to harden then continued to glue the opposite side and repeated this until it was covered.

The rainbow pieces were simple.

I glued the starting point of the yarn and just wrapped and wrapped and wrapped.. The only time I had to use the hot glue on the rainbow pieces was at the start and the end.

Once they were all wrapped, I pieced them together. I stacked all the rainbow strips on top of each other and folded them over to make a rainbow shape. I then started weaving the wire over and under to help keep the structure of the rainbow when it was standing up. I weaved the wire in three spots. At the top and on both ends.

Done. or so I thought.

After finishing the pieces, It felt like it was missing something. The sun was not right. It was a 1st year around the sun party and it didn’t look like the invitation or other decorations.

I had a lot of left over foam and yellow yarn so I decided to add some sun rays coming off of the sun. I cut two different sizes of foam and alternated long and short pieces. I used wire inside the rays to help keep the them a little more durable then wrapped them in yarn. I also left some wire sticking out of the bottom of the rays so I could use that to poke through the sun to keep it attached. Then finished with some hot glue to reenforce the rays.

Now, it felt right!

It matched the party perfect and really helped the soft play area feel cohesive with all the decorations the clients. If you would like to check out som more pictures from the 1st year around the sun party you can find them here!

I hope you enjoyed this as much as I did. Now go get creative!
